My Midwest Family Visits and Their Impression of Jersey City Heights vs Hoboken

This past week my family visited with me here in Jersey City Heights. The last time they came to this area I was living in Hoboken on Bloomfield Street.

It was so interesting to see their reaction to this urban area since they live in the foothills outside Boulder, Colorado. They cannot see their closest neighbor, but here on Central Avenue we have the typical city noise, people yelling, traffic, police sirens, taxis honking and more. Since I have a balcony they would sit out there and watch the city come to life, morning and night. They did love my space, very roomy and much bigger and more spacious than anything I’d had or could have in Hoboken. I have a small view of lower Manhattan and when we went to the roof we shot photos of the marvelous view.

It has been years since I lived down in Hoboken and my brother had fond memories of that location. He only wanted to visit Benny Tudino’s (no website? must call them) and show his youngest son the biggest slice of pizza in the world. We hit their restaurant twice! (They make a great salad too!) He also likes to run in the mornings, and last time came back so excited because he had run right past Joe Pantoliano. This time it was his son’s slight fascination with Buddy Valastro of Carlo’s Bakery and the Cakeboss TV show. Luckily he didn’t feel like standing on the line that stretches down two blocks now. Since he eats a lot of sweets he was thrilled when I showed him Goehrig’s Bakery up here. During the week he sampled almost everything Joseph Gigante makes! They also hit Rita’s for ice cream quite a few times.

It was so much fun being their tour guide around NYC. We visited the World Trade Center, Battery Park City (my favorite garden over there) and went to the top of the Empire State. We took the Yankee Clipper to see the Yankees battle the Red Sox. Yanks lost and it was brutally hot, not to mention that disaster clipper ride to the stadium which I wrote about previously. We went to the Jersey Shore, Sandy Hook and Point Pleasant.

My brother commented on the strong differences between Hoboken and JC Heights. Completely different types of people, stores, activity. It was obvious to him seeing the young professionals out to dinner and drinking every night of the week in Hoboken whereas up here some stores close and there’s no outdoor restaurants or any of the more upscale shops.

I completely understand and for a long time I thought that the Heights would change the way Hoboken did many years ago, but it just hasn’t happened. I think the Heights is stuck. With the economy suffering, businesses are closing and nothing opens in it’s place. There are stores that have been vacant since I’ve lived here. What can we do to make Central Avenue more attractive, safer and a better place to live?

They left on Sunday but couldn’t help sitting outside on the balcony one more time. It was quite early and there was no activity but I promised to keep them posted on the latest happenings.

Jersey City Heights vs Hoboken and Gentrification

I lived in Hoboken for 15 years before moving up to Jersey City Heights. Some of my friends who live up here thought I’d love it and I did when I first moved here almost 5 years ago. But Central Avenue has changed in the last few years and not for the better.

Due to the terrible economy, some of the stores have closed and some that were vacant 5 years ago, still are. Today a store can only survive if it sells products we truly need, like food and liquor. We can live without new sneakers, but we have to eat and have that glass of wine.

I have noticed that down in Hoboken stores close also, but a new store is more likely to open there, than here. It’s obvious to anyone who walks around here or there, the type of people who live and shop in these two areas are quite different.

A new store cannot open if the type of people who would shop there don’t exist up here, and if they don’t open better shops, the living spaces won’t improve driving up the cost, making the type of people who live up here better.

I realize it’s all a cycle and everything is connected. Just look at how Downtown Jersey City has reinvented itself, the same way Hoboken did years ago. New condominiums, shops, malls, parks, walkways, etc…

But “The Heights” is stuck in a downward spiral and no one is doing anything to help it. Hello, Mayor Healy? Each year in May, right on Central Avenue we have The Everything Jersey City Festival.” This past festival drew approximately 23,000 people and it was a spectacular day, but one festival, on one day, cannot bring a section of the city up to where it could be.

I’ve got visitors coming to visit from the midwest this summer and I’m wondering what they’re going to think about this area and if they’re going to wonder why I moved here. Yes the space I have is huge compared to Hoboken spaces, but when they see the locals, I can only imagine their horror. Well, all I can do is show them a great time in close by New York City, and the waterfront areas of Hoboken and Jersey City.

Everything Jersey City Festival 2010

Yesterday was the third annual Everything Jersey City Festival. What a marvelous day! The vendors came out, set up their tents, and the music was playing. This festival had just about everything I can imagine. A soccer field set up, kids activities including a wall to climb, face painting for all ages, & tattooing. All kinds of art, accessories, baby clothes, skin care and more. The restaurants had outdoor spaces or tents with all kinds of yummy things.

There were 4 sound stages with different music or performances at each. You’ll see in my photo gallery, I caught Actors Shakespeare Company at NJCU, The Benjamins and more.

I walked around to the various booths and met many new people and businesses. My friend and client Florence of Hudson Theatre Ensemble was manning the booth for Hudson County Theatre Alliance, and we got a shot together.

So many interesting people came by. Being an environmentalist as well as a designer, and trying to spread the message about Frogs and amphibians being in trouble (Frogs Are Green) I was greeted by two guys, one with a snake around his neck, the other with an iguana. The frog lady just had to get in there…

Anyway, it was a banner day for Jersey City Heights! Gallery photos!
