Many of the world’s major and powerful cultures have not only permitted suicide but actually condoned acts of self sacrifice—
Ancient Egypt, Classic Rome, China for almost three thousand years, Japan from prehistory into the 20th century, and Moghul India are but a few examples. There might be cases in which it is more merciful to kill another than to let the person
suffer; can you think of any such case and share it with the class? Or discuss a case in which it is morally permissible to sacrifice oneself (that is, carry out the act of killing yourself) in order to save another person and/or many other people. On what basis have we the right, then, to say that suicide is wrong? Examine instances in which you believe that it is acceptable to kill oneself or to sacrifice oneself and then explain instances in which you think that it is not ethically permissible to do so.
Be sure to include reasons that support your claims

Britain, in the wake of the Industrial Revolution, experienced a period of great social change in which the rapidly growing news media paid increasing attention to the activities of the poorer classes. The manner of Ayres' death caused great public interest, with large numbers of people attending her funeral and contributing to the funding of a memorial. Shortly after her death, she underwent what has been described as a "secular canonisation", being widely depicted in popular culture and, although very little was known about her life, widely cited as a role model. Various social and political movements promoted Ayres as an example of the values held by their particular movement. The circumstances of her death were distorted to give the impression that she was an employee willing to die for the sake of her employer's family, rather than for children to whom she was closely related. In 1902 her name was added to the Memorial to Heroic Self Sacrifice and in 1936 a street near the scene of the fire was renamed Ayres Street in her honour.

To love another person means to feel compassionate towards them, to "feel" what they 3 Apr 2016 Sacrifice is one of the purest and most selfless ways to love . There is no better way to show one's loyalty or love for another than Jesus deepens God's promises of comfort, care, and protection. He emphasizes divine love expressed in self-sacrifice. A good shepherd is far better than a hired hand. The hireling doesn't own the sheep, doesn't really care about the sheep, and runs at the first whiff of danger. He only wants a paycheck. The owner of the sheep is different. He'll do anything to save his sheep. "The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep," says Jesus about himself. This depiction of self-sacrifice recurs five times in this week's gospel, and then a sixth time in John's epistle: "Jesus Christ laid down his life for us." Confession of faith in Jesus leads to imitation of the life of Jesus. How can we claim genuine faith without authenticating action, asks John? Words lead to deeds: "This is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us." Religious faith is often self-referential. John's "command" about the human imitation of divine self-sacrifice is a needed reminder. He mentions sharing material possessions with those in need. That's only one of many applications of a broader principle that's rich with implications.(4) Love's Tenacity (vs. 7-8a) - The final five statements suggest that love does not cease. Like the rabbit on the battery commercial, it keeps on going, and going, and going. In other words, it is impossible for love to die. Do you believe that statement? Think about it carefully. I didn't say that it's impossible for romance to die, or for happiness to die, but for love to die. Neither did I say that it is impossible for a person to cease to be committed to the other. But where commitment is present, it is impossible to destroy that relationship. Heavy burdens cannot destroy it, for love 'beareth all things.' Suspicion cannot destroy it, for love 'believeth all things.' Discouragement cannot destroy it, for love 'hopeth all things.' Difficult trials cannot destroy it, for love 'endureth all things.' In fact nothing can destroy it, for love 'never faileth,' that is, it never ceases. "Many waters cannot quench love." When one person is committed to self-sacrifice for the benefit of another, no burden will be too heavy. Love is the willingness to bear all burdens, to trust your partner implicitly, to expect the best, and to endure the worst. Love is the commitment to keep on keeping on regardless of circumstances around you, feelings within you, and consequences ahead of you. Charity never faileth.
Do you love your spouse? Let me rephrase the question. Are you committed to unselfish living for the long haul? Is that commitment the sole factor in the future of your relationship? If not, then start now. Take the initiative to be kind. Bear insult and injury meekly. Go out of your way to make your partner happy. Forget about receiving anything in return. Commit yourself to a life of serving your mate. Away with rude remarks, biting sarcasms, irritability, judgmental criticism, and petty egotism. Sacrifice your own happiness for the happiness of your companion. Focus on being the kind of person God requires you to be and don't attempt to make your mate hold up their side of the bargain. After all, you promised to love, until death, period. Regardless of your spouse's behavior, you vowed to love. This is the kind of love that God commands.
On the authority of God's word, I guarantee that every couple who lives like this will never meet a problem that will kill their relationship, because charity never faileth. Furthermore, as a by-product of sacrificial love, the warm feelings of romance and the quiet contentment of friendship will resurface, sporadically at first, and more regularly as your years increase - together.
