We've been saying this same thing at National Writing Project as well as the multiple local writing project sites, but it's still a wonderful message to continue to convey. I think teachers are so overworked and battle weary that the 5 paragraph essay is sometimes a mindless, and easy choice. I've observed English teachers in my area who just give up and don't ask the kids to write anything but short answers and journals.

If high-school students and teachers are to succeed with Common Core Standards, the five-paragraph essay cannot be part of instruction. Too many times, this ordinary format is the default mode for expressing thinking in English, in history, in science, in P.E., and even in math. The problem is this format doesn't encourage thoughtful persuasion. It promotes low-level summary that nobody really cares about.

It has also been shown that skills and concepts taught in the learners’ home language do not have to be re-taught when they transfer to a second language. A learner who knows how to read and write in one language will develop reading and writing skills in a new language faster. The learner already knows that letters represent sounds, the only new learning he or she needs is how the new language ‘sounds’ its letters. In the same way, learners automatically transfer knowledge acquired in one language to another language as soon as they have learned sufficient vocabulary in the new language. For example, if you teach learners in their mother tongue, that seeds need soil, moisture and warmth to germinate. You do not have to re-teach this in English. When they have developed adequate vocabulary in English, they will translate the information. Thus, knowledge and skills are transferable from one language to another. Starting school in the learners’ mother tongue does not delay education but leads to faster acquisition of the skills and attitudes needed for success in formal education.

The research was an attempt to know the methods used to teach English to children. The research required an in depth analysis of the methods used by teachers to teach the language and the effect that each method had on the learning of the language. In order to get these information teachers from various schools were interviewed and the data collected was then analyzed in order to find the prevalent situation and then steps were taken to analyze the data collected from the interview. The completion of the research was largely dependent on the selecting the correct sample and then analyzing the data retrieved from it. The questions asked during the interview were also very important for the success of the research as a question missed could have left an entire aspect of teaching the language left untouched.

I enjoyed being a teacher, and enjoyed all of my time in Korea. I made great friends with whom I’m still in touch. I found I enjoyed the regular pattern of my days and weeks: walking to my bus stop, buying food for dinner, talking to the owner of my local convenience store in our very limited shared vocabulary of broken English and Korean. Encountering cultural differences was occasionally frustrating, but far more often rewarding, or even revelatory: so many things are better in Korea! I wish Australia had service buttons on every restaurant table, noraebangs, pool halls and cheap motels in every city and town, efficient and clean busses and trains departing regularly to all corners of the country.
