I was just catching up on the Hoboken Reporter and noticed an article, so I just had to help publicize. A brother-sister duo, Katie Welles and Hart Welles, have organized an arts & music festival to be held on Friday, February 5, 2010, 7-11 pm at Grace Van Vorst Church on Erie Street.

The festival will include music, art and other activities to bring awareness to “green” issues and organizations. The proceeds from the festival will go partially to the Friends of Liberty State Park, to plant more trees in the park, and to American Forests, a Washington D.C. based non-profit organization for tree preservation.

Students from different schools are participating, McNair, St. Peter’s Prep, and the Jersey City Public School Visual and Performing Arts program.

Various people and local businesses are sponsoring the event, such as Hudson County Executive, Tom DeGise and Rev, Nick Lannon. I have just written to them both to see if Frogs Are Green can be a sponsor also.

It’s been almost two weeks since the catastrophic earthquake struck Haiti. I watch the news, mostly CNN, everyday and it’s hard to have hope, when I see the destruction, damage and the Haitian people on the edge. For them to still be finding people is utterly amazing. I cannot imagine anything worse than being buried alive, and someone was pulled out yesterday after 11 days.

I am doing what I can as a citizen of the world, which is to donate money. I donated right after it happened, to Doctors Without Borders, then to the “Hope For Haiti Now” fund. This morning, I downloaded the album “Hope For Haiti Now” from itunes, which gives 100% of the proceeds to the fund. Listening to the album today, twice so far, these artists take my breath away. You can really hear the anguish and sadness from these musicians and you know they care. Thanks to George Clooney and all the celebrities for doing their part. Hopefully the telethon will replay soon, however tonight at 8PM, on CNN, if you didn’t see it, watch Larry King Live “How You Can Help Haiti”, and donate whatever you can, every little bit adds up.

I’ve learned so much these past 2 weeks about the Haitian people and as I see each reporter’s story unfold, I cannot thank Anderson Cooper 360, Dr. Sanjay Gupta (my new HERO) and the rest of the CNN staff for bringing it to us. The Haitian people have strong faith and an unbelievable will. To see them singing in spite of their situation and yelling their love for family members, children or spouses, while still pinned under rubble, just made me cry, sometimes with hope and sometimes with sadness. Let’s hope CNN will continue to report from Haiti for a long time to come, so the people of the world don’t forget. CNN can keep us informed and we can continue to help these people.

What will become of the tens of thousands of orphaned children, and the homeless? Haiti has a long road of rebuilding ahead. Hopefully we can help them rebuild stronger, perhaps greener and let’s get it under way very, very soon. Once the rain comes, it will make a dire situation, so much worse.

This afternoon the weather warmed up a bit to the upper 40s and so it was time to get out there and start walking. I love to walk around town, down to Hoboken, along the waterfront, and back up the hill. My route today was a big circle starting from “The Heights” of Jersey City, down the elevator at 9th Street, up to 14th street and across to walk along the water and down to First Street, across to Paterson Plank Rd. and back up.

Paterson Plank Rd. is a route that is mostly used by cars and buses rushing up and down, but there is a walkway and occasionally you see bicycle riders, runners and folks just walking along, more in warmer weather.

What I’d like to know is, who’s job is it to clean this walkway, because the amount of trash I saw on my walk today, was insane. Besides the leaves that had fallen, there was glass, crushed plastic bottles, newspapers, cans, empty chip bags… you name it, I saw it.

I assume this area is considered Jersey City, but have they cut back? Is there no clean-up detail to work this area anymore? Also, you wouldn’t believe what I saw just thrown over the little wall you walk along that is above the Light Rail train tracks. All kinds of assorted trash including a shopping cart from a supermarket.

I imagine people just drop things as they walk along, or perhaps people throw things out of the car windows as they zoom up? All I know is, if they don’t address the garbage there soon, there won’t be any space left to walk.

There’s a bakery close to my design studio that bakes the most delicious things and has some really, really good, coffee. I frequent “Goehrig’s Bakery” often, sometimes to pick up Joey’s amazing carrot muffins or almond cookies, and sometimes for things to share with friends. Goehrig’s Bakery is also one of my clients, having built their website, but I go, because everything is just so awesome.

Recently, I was talking to Joey and said, “if I keep eating all that amazing stuff, I’m going to get fat! Maybe I should start walking and riding my bike more!” Joey answered, “Maybe you could ride your bicycle to the bakery.” Well, it sounds funny of course, but it made me think, how many of us do something good, so we can follow it with something bad?

We trick ourselves, don’t we? If I walk two miles, when I get back, I can eat a cookie or two; if I go to the gym and work out, I can have some wine with dinner or that dessert.

I know that many times, I walk down to Hoboken with a friend and we can walk around and around, and then go for coffee and a snack or have lunch out.

I suppose we balance it out everyday, the good and the bad. If we were good all the time we’d feel deprived. I know I would.

So, today since it’s starting to warm up, I’ve got my sneakers on, and will go for a 2-3 mile walk and on the way back, I will stop in at the bakery for a coffee and….

I have always tried to show, by design or blogging, that people need to reuse, recycle, plant, not tear down, and just plain care more about this place Earth, we all call home. I love the outdoors, gardens, beaches, forests, and have plants, nice green living things in every room, and every Spring into Summer, I have a small outdoor space which is full of flowers. In warmer weather, I ride my bicycle, so I can see and photograph the beautiful gardens around New York and New Jersey. When I travel, I see what I can of the landscape and enjoy it.

However, I’m really beginning to worry about the state of our planet (more than usual). This Winter has been quite frigid, and the snow in some parts of the world, has been at record proportions. The weather in general has been from one extreme to another, and if anyone still doesn’t believe we have global warming, just look around.

People generally live selfishly and don’t think “green,” so I think with Earth Day coming on April 22, and it being the 40th anniversary, it’s a great opportunity to spread the message, that every single person needs to reconnect and realize they are part of nature and do more to help save the planet.

Yesterday, I went to see Avatar, like millions of others, and I was blown away by the story, and the 3D effects. It was so visually stunning and 3d glasses enhanced the natural beauty and made you feel like you were really there. It made me feel so good and I wished everyone felt about our planet, the way the “Na’vi” people felt about Pandora.

I have been thinking about ways to help spread the message of Earth Day and will be designing posters and t-shirts for both i-Tees and the FROGS ARE GREEN sites. Look for more of them in the next week or two. I’m also looking for anyone who’d like to collaborate with me, by donating an illustration or photograph, for this purpose.
